Teaching Gratitude this Thanksgiving

ιIt’s easy for Thanksgiving time to become all about the turkey and family gatherings. Here are some fun ideas for teaching your kids about God and gratitude this time of year.

Build a Blessings Tree

  1. Gather a few bare, thin tree branches/sticks.
  2. Cut leaf shapes out of construction paper.
  3. Talk to your kids about what blessings they’ve received and what they are thankful for.
  4. Write the thankfulness items on the leaves.
  5. Glue the leaves on to the sticks.

Read Aloud Bible Verses

Younger kids will enjoy being read to and older ones can memorize and recite these Bible verses focusing on being thankful.

“I thank my God every time I remember you.” (Philippians 1:3)

“I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.” (Psalm 69:30)

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” (1 Chronicles 16:34)

“…give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Make Special Treats to Give Away

Talk to your kids about how God blesses us so that we might bless others. Brainstorm with them about who might need a little extra kindness. Is it a neighbor who has been ill? Or a widow nearby? Pray for that person while you bake cookies or make a special snack mix (pretzels, m&ms, sunflower seeds, nuts, etc.). Have the kids draw a card to accompany the treats.

We hope you have the most blessed Thanksgiving yet!
